BEHIND THE SCENES: POSING A PARQUET FLOOR USING THE TRADITIONAL METHOD

Ré-novateurs recently finalized an exciting project involving an apartment that needed to be transformed to an office space.

Although we initially planned to preserve the original parquet, when removing the carpet covering it, we discovered we had an issue with squeaking floorboards. Also, the joists covering the parquet were too damaged to use.

Therefore, our client decided to replace the old parquet, but not any which way! Effectively, the client insisted that the laying of the new parquet was made in the rules of art, that is, in accordance with the traditional method of laying a parquet floor.

The first step for the Ré-novateurs team was to remove all the old parquet!

Once this had been done, only a concrete slab remained.

The traditional method of laying a parquet floor now demanded that, rather than pouring a footing, we pose joists on top of the concrete slab using plaster or cement. These joists were made up of rectangular, wooden pieces that are used to elevate the parquet such that it is placed at the right height.

The new parquet boards were then posed on top of the joists and assembled. For this project, we made the decision to pose the boards in a herringbone style to replicate the prior flooring and preserve the charm of the space.

Once we had finished posing the parquet boards, it became evident that we had succeeded in having the space reflect its old charm yet offer a more contemporary style thanks to the renovation work. It is now ready to welcome office workers.
